Total Quality Management

Course Description

Total quality is approached from the organizational culture and a culture change perspective. In the 21st century customers expect quality and continuous improvement is a requirement. The student will develop a practical approach for initiating total quality to achieve organizational excellence. The student will gain practical experience with quality issues and the tools to design, implement, and sustain total quality programs.

Aims

The courses aims to teach how to:

  • Determine the impact of quality on profitability
  • Adopt TQM as a fundamental business strategy
  • Communicate the importance of customer focused TQM
  • Use seven QC tools for data collection and analysis
  • Implement a business strategy driven by Total Quality Management (TQM)
  • Accomplish the cultural transformation necessary for successful implementation of total quality practices
  • Achieve world-class status in manufacturing and service through TQM
  • Apply the Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award guidelines to TQM initiatives

Course Objectives

The student should develop the foundations for understanding a number of quality systems and management concepts that are common today and assumed to be a part of a world class, global organization. These include ISO 9000 and 14000 programs, Baldrige Awards, Six Sigma, Project Mangement, Strategic Planning, Organizational Alignment and 360 Degree Appraisal. The student will also develop an understanding through experiencing common improvement tools and processes The outcome of this course of study will be an understanding of a broad array of quality systems and tools and the skills required to design, implement, and sustain a total quality program appropriate to the student's workplaces and/or target organizations.

Total Quality Management is a guided tour along the road to total quality. It reviews the history of quality and examines the wide variety of philosophies, concepts, and techniques for managing, controlling and improving, quality. Finally, it takes you step-by-step through the implementation process. Understand total quality concept and techniques for managing, controlling, and improving quality. Gain the information and skills needed to implement total quality practices.

Total Quality Management has been designed specifically for the practicing manager and the future manager. It provides private, self-paced, individualized study; learning and selfevaluation through in-text exercises; and communication between the student and instructors through assignments and a final examination based on the case study.
