Software Quality Analysis
Description
This course provides a basic knowledge base for anyone interested in implementing or improving Software Quality Engineering techniques and practices in their organization. Information and skills taught in this course are presented in combination of lecture and interactive formats. Actual examples from the software industry are utilized to make the information relevant. The emphasis is on techniques that allow the student to transition the skills learned in this course to their own work environments.
Outline
The Basics of Software Quality Engineering
Benefits of Software Quality – A discussion of how software quality engineering can benefit an organization including a how quality methodologies can reduce the length of time for testing and can influence other defect detection methods.
Software Quality Related Standards and Models – An overview of software quality, process and assessment standards and models, including ISO 9001, ISO 15504, IEEE software standards, IEEE/EIA 12207, and the SEI Capability Maturity Model IntegratedSM (CMMI).
Software Quality Management
Software Quality Goals and Objectives – A discussion of how to describe, analyze and evaluate the quality goals and objectives for programs, projects, and products.
Software Quality Management (SQM) Systems Documentation – An overview of the various SQM system documents that a company should have in place and their relationship to each other.
Overview of Cost of Quality (COQ) – How to define, differentiate, and analyze COQ categories (prevention, appraisal, internal failure, external failure).
Problem Reporting and Corrective Action Procedures – An overview of procedures for defining, reporting and analyzing software defects, process nonconformances, and other quality system deficiencies.
Audits – An overview of techniques for planning and conducting software audits.
Software Engineering Processes
Life Cycles – Comparison of the characteristics of waterfall, V, U-Dot, spiral, incremental, evolutionary and rapid prototyping models. Team exercise on selecting the appropriate life cycle model.
Life Cycle Phases – An overview of the purpose, deliverables and quality methods of the various phases of the software development life cycle (e.g., concept, requirements, design, code, test).
Software Process Definition - An overview of the elements of useful software process documentation.
Program & Project Management
Tracking and Controlling – Overview of various tracking and control methods including phase transition, project metrics, status reporting and project reviews.
Software Metrics, Measurement & Analytical Methods
Selecting and Designing Metrics – Overview of how to select and design metrics that match the information needs of your organization.
Commonly Used Metrics – A survey of various metrics used to assess software processes, products, and resources. Define common metrics used to measure various aspects of software, including complexity, size, defects, requirements volatility, and system performance.
Software Verification & Validation (V&V)
Reviews and Inspections – Overview of the various types of reviews and inspections, including desk-checking, walk-throughs, and inspections.
Testing – Overview of the various types of test, including structural integration, black-box and regression.
Software Configuration Management
Configuration Infrastructure - Overview of the roles and responsibilities of the configuration management group.
